legislation type Executive
Decree
Passed in 2014
This decree adopts the Special Climate Change Program 2021-2024 into law.

The initial version concerned the Special Climate Change Program 2014-2018. The objective of the Special Climate Change Program 2014-2018 is to reduce the vulnerability of populations and productive sectors, preserve and protect ecosystems and environmental services and increase infrastructure resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change. The instruments included in the Special Climate Change Program 2014-2018 include the country's National Risk Atlas, the National Vulnerability Atlas, the National Emission Inventory, the National Emission Registry, the Official Mexican Standard, the Information System on Climate Change and other financial, market and economic instruments, such as the country's carbon tax, emissions trading system and climate change fund.

The updated version sets new priority objectives for the 2021-2024 period:

  • Adaptation and resilience;
  • Climate change mitigation;
  • Promote synergies within mitigation and adaptation actions and policies.
  • Strengthen coordination mechanisms, financing and means of implementation between different governmental levels for the implementation of climate change policies, prioritise the co-creating of capacities and the inclusion of different sectors, based on a human rights approach.
